THE ATMOSPHERES OF THE HOT-JUPITERS KEPLER-5b AND KEPLER-6b OBSERVED DURING OCCULTATIONS WITH WARM-SPITZER AND KEPLER

چکیده
This paper reports the detection and the measurements of occultations of the two transiting hot giant exoplanets Kepler-5b and Kepler-6b by their parent stars. The observations are obtained in the near-infrared with Warm-Spitzer Space Telescope and at optical wavelengths by combining more than a year of Kepler photometry. The investigation consists of constraining the eccentricities of these systems and of obtaining broadband emergent photometric data for individual planets. For both targets, the occultations are detected at the 3σ level at each wavelength with midoccultation times consistent with circular orbits. The brightness temperatures of these planets are deduced from the infrared observations and reach TSpitzer = 1930 ± 100 K and TSpitzer = 1660 ± 120 K for Kepler-5b and Kepler-6b, respectively. We measure optical geometric albedos Ag in the Kepler bandpass and find Ag = 0.12 ± 0.04 for Kepler-5b and Ag = 0.11 ± 0.04 for Kepler-6b, leading to upper an limit for the Bond albedo of AB 0.17 in both cases. The observations for both planets are best described by models for which most of the incident energy is redistributed on the dayside, with only less than 10% of the absorbed stellar flux redistributed to the nightside of these planets.

Kepler constraints on planets near hot Jupiters.
We present the results of a search for planetary companions orbiting near hot Jupiter planet candidates (Jupiter-size candidates with orbital periods near 3 d) identified in the Kepler data through its sixth quarter of science operations. Special emphasis is given to companions between the 21 interior and exterior mean-motion resonances. A photometric transit search excludes companions with siz...
متن کاملLow False Positive Rate of Kepler Candidates Estimated from a Combination of Spitzer and Follow-up Observations
NASA’s Kepler mission has provided several thousand transiting planet candidates during the four years of its nominal mission, yet only a small subset of these candidates have been confirmed as true planets. Therefore, the most fundamental question about these candidates is the fraction of bona fide planets. Estimating the rate of false positives of the overall Kepler sample is necessary to der...
متن کاملDiscovery and Atmospheric Characterization of Giant Planet Kepler-12b: an Inflated Radius Outlier
We report the discovery of planet Kepler-12b (KOI-20), which at 1.695± 0.030 RJ is among the handful of planets with super-inflated radii above 1.65 RJ. Orbiting its slightly evolved G0 host with a 4.438-day period, this 0.431± 0.041 MJ planet is the least-irradiated within this largest-planet-radius group, which has important implications for planetary physics. The planet’s inflated radius and...
متن کاملConstraining the false positive rate for Kepler planet candidates with multicolour photometry from the GTC
Using the Optical System for Imaging and low Resolution Integrated Spectroscopy (OSIRIS) instrument installed on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), we acquired multicolour transit photometry of four small (Rp 5 R⊕) short-period (P 6 d) planet candidates recently identified by the Kepler space mission. These observations are part of a programme to constrain the false positive rate for sm...
متن کاملThe Hot-jupiter Kepler-17b: Discovery, Obliquity from Stroboscopic Starspots, and Atmospheric Characterization
This paper reports the discovery and characterization of the transiting hot giant exoplanet Kepler17b. The planet has an orbital period of 1.486 days, and radial velocity measurements from the HobbyEberly Telescope show a Doppler signal of 419.5 −15.6 ms . From a transit-based estimate of the host star’s mean density, combined with an estimate of the stellar effective temperature Teff=5630± 100...
